Bringing together the work of a mother and daughter, ROOTS offers an intimate look at two distinct artistic voices shaped by a shared history. Rooted in their Jamaican heritage and influenced by tropical environments, memories, and experiences, Sarah and Kaye explore themes of growth, connection, family, and place through their individual practices.

Sarah Hanna is a third-generation artist whose nearly three-decade career has spanned painting, teaching, and experiential art. With a background in both the visual and culinary arts, Hanna approaches her work with extraordinary attention to detail, patience, and playfulness.

Since 2022, Hanna has created immersive art experiences that invite families and children to imagine, and create together. Whether teaching a child to see themselves as an artist or creating a large-scale collaborative painting, she is interested in art as both an object and an experience- something that can create joy, connection, and lasting memory.

At the heart of Hanna’s practice is a simple philosophy: the way you do anything is the way you do everything.

Kaye Hanna is a Caribbean-born artist whose creative journey began early, nurtured by her mother, an artist and art teacher. At sixteen, Kaye came to the United States to attend college, her high-school art portfolio from Jamaica earning her an art scholarship. She went on to receive a B.A in Graphic Arts from the University of Central Florida.

Art has remained a constant throughout her life. From Jamaica to Florida and the Turks and Caicos Islands, Kaye has maintained a studio in every home, allowing her practice to evolve across places, experiences, and disciplines.

‍Today, Kaye works from her lakeside studio in Orlando, where she continues to explore the possibilities of painting.

“ROOTS brings together mother and daughter Kaye and Sarah Hanna in an exploration of family, memory, and the landscape that shapes us.

Raised in Jamaica, Kaye developed a visual language influenced by her Caribbean upbringing and classical arts education. Her dreamlike botanical landscapes move between observation and memory, while Sarah’s expressive approach reimagines the natural world through vibrant color, gestural mark-making, and heightened atmosphere.

Though distinct in practice, both artists return to a shared inheritance of art, nature, family, and place. Like the botanical systems within their paintings, these creative and familial roots have been tended, adapted, and passed forward across generations.

Together, their work reveals the maternal thread connecting landscape to memory, mother to daughter, and one artist’s hand to the next.”

Join us at Meredith Sand Designs on Saturday, October 24th from 3 to 6 PM for a unique collaborative exhibition by Sarah Hanna and Kaye Hanna.
