Mimi’s paintings evoke Eastern spirituality with Western imagery without imposing boundaries, resulting in contemporary, modern, and inspirational works with universal appeal.
There is a bold and confident freedom of technique that retains some of the brushwork of Chinese calligraphy. Twilight moods, marked by dense textures and strong, dramatic compositions, are infused with the artist’s personal emotions, evoking a sense of poignancy and lyricism. Her work consistently shows an embrace of Zen principles: emptiness, chance, and oneness with nature.

Mimi was born in Highland Park, Illinois, and earned a degree in Psychology with Honors at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mimi spent her professional life working in publishing and digital media, including long stints at HBO and Time Warner in New York City, soaking up the iconic years of East Village graffiti and pop art, punk, and the early galleries scenes before moving to Orlando in 1995 to continue her work in publishing and technology, and the arts.
There are places we remember not because of their geography, but because of the way they made us feel. A quiet shoreline at dusk. The view through a familiar window. The stillness that follows rain. Long after their details begin to fade, these places remain with us, carried not as images but as sensations.
The paintings in Thresholds exist within this space between memory and experience. Rather than describing its landscape, Mimi Hwang paints its emotional resonance; those fleeting impressions that evade language but remain deeply familiar.
